Merritt Island Area Airports
Merritt Island has two airports: one special-use facility and one regional airport. Several others are within driving distance.
The historic Launch and Landing Facility (LLF)1 is in Kennedy Space Center (KSC). It is a specialized facility that is not accessible to the public.
Merritt Island Airport (COI)2 is in south Merritt Island. Private planes, charter flights, and aerial tours use this regional airport.
For commercial flights on major airlines, Merritt Island is accessible by airports in nearby cities. The following are within a 90-minute drive from Merritt Island. Each offers domestic and international flights.
- Orlando International Airport (MCO)3
- Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB)4
- Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB)5
Other Considerations
Depending on the time of year and route, prices and availability of flights vary widely. Some flights are seasonal to accommodate snowbirds and vacationers. From May to August, afternoon thunderstorms cause delays, so morning flights are a better choice in summertime.
Although Brevard County and central Florida have several public transit services6789, none offer convenient routes from the Merritt Island area to the major airports. The best options for getting to the airport is driving or using a private transportation service.
